Royal Lochnagar Distillery

Highlight • Structure

The first Lochnagar distillery was burnt down in 1824 under suspicious circumstances and a replacement distillery burnt down again in 1841. In 1845 John Begg built the "new" Lochnagar. The distillery was awarded the Royal Warrant in 1848 when John Begg invited Prince Albert to visit the distillery from nearby Balmoral Castle, the Queen's residence in the Highlands. The next day, Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and her three eldest children visited the distillery. The distillery was then known as Royal Lochnagar. Today, Royal Lochnagar is leased by Diageo from Abergeldie Estate, and the distillery produces a relatively small amount of whiskey, most of which is used for Johnnie Walker's black and blue label.

Balmoral Castle Gate

Highlight • Monument

There's nothing more to see here than a gate. Hidden behind it, of course, is Balmoral Castle, the famous summer residence of the British royal family. With a ticket, we were able to visit it with our bikes in hand, which was really nice.

Ballater Station

Highlight • Historical Site

The station of Ballater, which has been closed down since 1966, houses a museum. This shows, among other things, the waiting room of Queen Victoria, who used the train station Ballater on the journey to Balmoral Castle. Much of the station fell victim to a fire in May 2015. The museum was only partially affected. [3]
Balmoral Castle, which is still inhabited by the royal family in the summer, is about 14 km to the west and gives the area the name "Royal Deeside". Two miles south of Ballater is Birkhall, an estate that is temporarily occupied by Prince Charles.
The Blue Cairn Circle (also called Balronald Wood) is a Recumbent Stone Circle (RSC) at Ballater.
