Green Gable

Highlight • Natural Monument

At 2,628 feet (801 m), Green Gable is one of the higher fells in the Lake District, yet it's completely overshadowed by its illustrious, monstrous neighbour, Great Gable. However, whether you're bound for Great Gable or not, Green Gable is still a magnificent objective. It boasts simply superb views of its parent peak, particularly to Gable Crag, its north-facing cliffs.

There are many ways up Green Gable, though perhaps the finest is from Seathwaite via Sourmilk Gill. This is an excellent scrambly ascent made all the more spectacular by the tumbling stream.

Windy Gap

Highlight • Viewpoint

This is one of those places in the Lakes where you really feel as though you're in true mountain country. Windy Gap, a col between Gables Green and Great, is an exciting place to be. This is especially so if you've got the rocky clamber to the summit of Great Gable, arguably Lakeland's finest fell, still to come. The col also gives you superb views right down the barrel of Ennerdale, with Pillar towering on the left and the High Stile ridge on the right.

Great Gable summit

Highlight • Natural Monument

A humongous, rugged mass of rock and crags and cliffs, Great Gable is captivating to look at: an unbroken, devilish pyramid from the south; the dome of a sleeping, curled-up giant from the north. It is a spiritual place too, its summit adorned with a poignant war memorial.

Sty Head Stretcher Box

Highlight • Trail

Sty Head is the apex of an ancient and wild trade route between Borrowdale and Wasdale, the Styhead Pass. Right in the mountainous heart of the Lake District, it separates two giants, the charismatic Great Gable and Great End, the lofty north-western termination of the Scafell massif.

Its position makes it the meeting point of six distinct paths. As well as the two trails from Wasdale and the one from Borrowdale, another two seek out Great Gable, while the other ventures up into the Scafells. The top of the pass is also the location of a mountain rescue stretcher box, highlighting the seriousness of the mountain terrain that surrounds it.

Stockley Bridge

Highlight • Historical Site

On the way up, this is where the adventure really starts, totally surrounded by mountains. On the way back down, you know you are nearly back, only around 20 minutes to the car! It's also a great place for a photo or a selfie.
