Gnome Trail

Highlight • Trail

Even small children can walk easily. The paths meander beautifully through the forest, there is a lot of variety and lots of birdhouses on the trees. The figures were certainly designed with a lot of love, some of them are a bit scary. 😅

The “Bos Elfbergen” forest is the largest forest in Gaasterland. It is one of the forests that were planted in the 19th century by Baron Van Swinderen. This forest is home to coniferous and deciduous tree species of all ages. The adjacent “Wyldemerk” is a nature reserve with an idyllic lake. The special nature of “Wyldemerk” has ensured that this piece of land has been declared a dragonfly reserve.
In summer, around 35 species of dragonflies can be found here.

Part of the “Elfbergen” forest has been designated a dog forest. Dogs are allowed to run around here without a leash (as long as they are supervised)

HISTORY OF THE KIPPENBURG MANOR

Baron Oncko van Swinderen (1775 - 1850) from Groningen built the Kippenburg manor house around 1830. There he also founded a chicken yard, to which this name refers. Oncko's father came from Groningen, his mother came from the Frisian van Wyckel family, who had many properties in Gaasterland. Six generations later, the house is still owned by a direct descendant, Jkvr. A.M.J. by Panhuys. From about 1854 to 1985 Kippenburg was used as a guest house/inn. Partly due to its beautiful location in the green heart of Gaasterland, this was one of the most famous resorts in Friesland. Nowadays the villa can be rented in its entirety for groups. Both the exterior and the layout of the building are largely unchanged.

Kippenburg is a National Monument and NSW property. The property is surrounded by the Star Numan and Lycklama forests, among others. The surrounding forests previously belonged to the family. (Friesland.nl)

Bell chair

Highlight • Monument

A bell tower is a scaffold of thick wooden or iron beams in which one or more bells are hung. A bell tower can be mounted at the top of the church or bell tower, but can also be freestanding. A carillon also hangs in a bell chair.

In masonry church towers, the need to install a bell tower soon arose once an assembly of shutter bells had been built. The ringing of these bells caused cracks in the tower body. That is why various oak constructions were developed that conducted the vibrations downwards well and could still support the weight of the movable bells, which sometimes weigh more than 500 kilos each.
