The official website promotes the DRAKE'S TRAIL with the words, "Drake's Trail in West Devon is a 21-mile cycling and walking route linking Tavistock with Plymouth. This important part of Devon's recreational route network runs through superb countryside with attractive scenery along the western edge of Dartmoor, along with much historical and heritage interest."

Magpie Viaduct

Magpie Viaduct was designed by Brunel and originally built in 1859 from granite and timber, then rebuilt in 1902 in Staffordshire brick.

From here you can also enjoy a raised vantage point for views over Dartmoor.

Grenofen Tunnel

Highlight • Structure

Part of the Drake’s Trail and the Dartmoor Way, this 374-yard (341 m) tunnel was built by Brunel in the mid-1850s for the South Devon & Tavistock Railway. After the line closed, it sat abandoned for decades before being resurfaced and opened as a foot and cycle path.

The tunnel is lit and is a fun addition to an already amazing route. It has a tendency to drip on the heads of those who use it though!

Gem Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Gem Bridge towers 78 feet (24 m) above the River Walkham, affording wonderful views over the valley below. Until 1965, the original Walkham Viaduct would have stood here. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, it was demolished after the closure of the railway.

It's a wonderful experience to cycle over the bridge, especially in autumn when the trees are painted red.

Waterfall near Burrator Reservoir

Burrator Reservoir, near Yelverton on the south-west side of Dartmoor, is surrounded by attractive wooded countryside. On the west side of the reservoir this waterfall is fed by the Devonport Leat, an artificial watercourse that was constructed in the 1790s to provide a water supply to Devonport. Most of the water from the leat now flows into Burrator Reservoir which supplies water to Plymouth.

Burrator Discovery Centre

Burrator Discovery Centre is a visitor centre located near Burrator Reservoir, on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. It opened in 2014 as part of the Burrator Historic and Natural Environment project. The centre offers exhibitions and displays about Burrator’s history, wildlife and culture. You can see spoken history, an interactive screen and a children’s discovery zone. You can also explore the conservation garden, which features a totem pole and a range of plants found on Dartmoor.

The centre is open from 10am to 4pm daily, except for Saturdays and alternate Thursdays. You can also buy permits for fishing at Burrator Reservoir, which is one of the most tranquil and picturesque natural angling venues in the South West. The reservoir is surrounded by woodlands, wetlands and moorlands, and offers ample walks and views.

This is a tranquil little place, excellent for a walk, run or cycle. Beautiful scenery with lots of viewing points.

A road runs round the reservoir, so if you are walking, be aware of traffic.

Burrator Reservoir is situated within Dartmoor, and the tranquil water and surrounding mixed woodland contrasts sharply with the open moor and the rugged Dartmoor tors. A trip here can be combined with a walk across the moors, or enjoyed as a trip of its own with plenty to do – from walking and taking in the views, to fishing for rainbow and brown trout (just be sure to get a permit, available online or by calling South West Lakes). Devon has relatively few lakes, but the situation and quality of these make them a hidden gem in Devon’s crown.
