Urnerboden Village

Highlight • Settlement

According to legend, the border should be drawn after quarrels between Glarnern and Urnern where two runners met after the first cock crowing. The Glarner fattened their faucet, the Urner left theirs hungry. The Urner Hahn crowed very early and gave his runner a big lead, which allowed him to win the Urner Boden and more. Out of pity the Urner still allowed the Glarner to regain the frontier as far as he could carry him. The Glarner carried him back a fair bit until he collapsed dead.

Alpine Fen Meadow

Highlight • Natural

Bogs form when the ground is constantly saturated with water. In the case of fens, it is usually slope and groundwater. Organic soils form on such wet sites because humus degradation is greatly reduced. Only species that are adapted to these specific site conditions occur.

Various species of orchids, such as blood-red orchid, onion orchid or marsh orchid but also the beautifully flowering fever clover are attractive species in this now rare habitat. The fluffy inflorescences of the cotton grass, which also occurs, add splashes of white color to the landscape in summer. To prevent fens from growing into wet forests, regular litter cutting or extensive grazing is necessary.

A Scharhag separates the Schletterriti nature reserve from the rest of the Urnerboden. This fence, built only from wooden posts and sticks - without metal or nails - protects a fen that also serves to promote amphibians.

A handful of ponds and some ditches serve as spawning areas for a population of grass frogs. The ponds are fed by groundwater and therefore never dry out. Structural elements such as rhizomes on the banks provide frogs with hiding places.

View of the Urnerboden Moorland

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Urnerboden represents a unique cultural landscape in Switzerland. The largest Kuhalp in Switzerland is managed by around 50 alpine farmers with around 1,000 summer animals. Due to the quality and size of the alp, the Urnerboden is of great importance for agriculture in the canton of Uri.

Large parts of the Urnerboden are of national importance as a moorland landscape. The landscape has an original, undisturbed character. It has a variety of relief forms, lively traditional uses and well-preserved cultural landscape elements such as wooden fences, stone walls and alpine and scattered huts.

The ecological importance of the Urnerboden lies in the widespread moorland areas on the plain and the species-rich dry meadows and pastures on the southern slope. Around 34 hectares of moors (flat and raised moors) and around 114 hectares of dry pastures or wild hay areas are designated and are mostly of national importance. Other habitats such as streams, springs, trees and forests complement the valuable habitat mosaic.
