21 cast steles mark the course of the former Oberwaldbahn, the route of which forms today's Vulkanradweg. Here at the rest area between Eichen and Altenstadt are 8 original steles that were created by the artist Wilfried Klaus from railway sleepers.

Wonecken/Windecken Castle - Nidderau/MKK 🚴‍♂️

Windecken Castle, also known as Wonnecke Castle, is the medieval castle of Nidderau in the Main-Kinzig district, dating back to the 13th century.
It was built by the Lords and Counts of Hanau. It was severely damaged during the Thirty Years' War. Still visible today are two 16th-century gatehouses, the 18th-century official residence and castle cellar, as well as parts of the ring wall, two round towers, and, to the west, the outer bailey with its witch's tower.
From 1736 onwards, the complex was largely replaced by newer buildings. A larger residential building with a mansard roof, erected in the castle courtyard, housed the district court until 1970. Since then, it has been used as a residential building again. The cellar now houses a restaurant. To the left of the inner gate, a smaller building was built in the 18th century and served as a prison for a time.

Because the complex is privately owned, it can only be viewed from the outside. 🚴‍

The church site was part of a donation that Gislebertus von Heldenbergen made to the Benedictine monastery of Naumburg in 1173. Later, it and its lands belonged to the Limburg Abbey on the Haardt. The first parish priest of Heldenbergen is mentioned in 1192. In 1231, the abbey transferred the church in Heldenbergen to the Mainz Cathedral Chapter. This explains why Heldenbergen became a Catholic exclave in the otherwise predominantly Protestant Wetterau region.

During the Reformation, the Archbishopric of Mainz had the right to appoint the parish priest and thus determine the denomination. Heldenbergen otherwise belonged to the territory of Friedberg Castle, a small, imperial free noble republic that gradually became Protestant from 1545 onward.

Construction of the present church was begun in 1751 by Tyrolean master builders who were also active in Oberwöllstadt and Obererlenbach, and was completed in 1754 with its consecration by the Mainz Auxiliary Bishop Niebel.

The church's furnishings are unusually rich. The main and side altars, as well as the pulpit, date from the beginning of the 19th century in their architectural style. They were acquired from Gernsheim. The frames of the altar niches were redesigned in the advanced Rococo style. The iconographic program of the main altar dramatically depicts the divine mystery of the Trinity.

Possibility to get on the train or take the train up to here and start a tour on the volcanic cycle path. The station building is very well preserved and houses an Italian, where you can also sit outside.
