View of the Roche de Solutré

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Solutré rock is a limestone escarpment overlooking the town of Solutré-Pouilly, 8 km west of Mâcon. It is an emblematic site of Saône-et-Loire, in the south of the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region.

Protected under the law on classified sites and today a Grand Site de France, it draws its fame from several points of interest: a rare geological phenomenon in this region and the eponymous prehistoric site of a Paleolithic culture (the Solutrean), On its summit – which culminates at 493 meters – it shelters a specific environment (the limestone lawns of the Mâconnais) with particular fauna and flora.

Occupied by man for at least 55,000 years, it is also the cradle of Pouilly-Fuissé, a renowned white wine. It was publicized from the 1980s by the ritual ascension of President François Mitterrand accompanied by many friends.

At this point you will find the car park to climb directly to the top of the Roche. The slope is steep so this course is intended for the most athletic.

Solutré Prehistory Museum

Highlight • Historical Site

At the foot of the rock of Solutré settlement could be detected over five Stone Age periods. In addition, the findings of large quantities of animal bones have a great importance for the research of Stone Age hunting methods.

The finds are exhibited in the Prehistoric Museum in Solutré. This museum was built underground, so as not to disturb the overall impression of this breathtaking landscape, and can only be reached through a small entrance. Nevertheless, the architects were able to relate to the prehistoric site by integrating light and sight shafts. [Https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solutr%C3%A9-Pouilly]
