Bassum Cemetery

Highlight • Historical Site

The oldest part of the Bassumer Friedhof on Eschenhäuser Straße was opened around 1850. At first only the abbesses and canonesses found their final resting place here. Until 1967 there was also a crypt in this area. However, this was poured in because it was repeatedly haunted by burglars. In earlier times, teachers and pastors from Bassum were also buried not far from the abbess graves. In the old part of the cemetery, each village in Bassum that was part of the Bassum parish had its own area. A number of so-called history and commemorative panels also provide information about events and burials during the Nazi dictatorship, e.g. of deceased Eastern European forced laborers (panel 6) and their children (panel 4). With its avenues of willow trees, the cemetery gives a special impression.
