Monsheim Castle

First mentioned in the 14th century as the moated castle “Veste Monsheim”. Today's castle complex was built in 1651 by the "Lords of Wachenheim". From 1780 to 1852 the property was owned by the von Gagern family. Heinrich von Gagern, the President of the National Assembly in 1848, was the most important resident. The castle was later owned by Baron Heyl zu Herrnsheim, and the tenant was the Knauff family with the women's riding school. The Monsheimer Hinkelstein, one of the largest monoliths in Rheinhessen (which I unfortunately didn't see), also stands in the courtyard. Today the castle is privately owned.

Just a few meters from here is the bird trail. There you will find numerous information boards and a photogenic viaduct along the Pfrimm and jungle-like forest, and you will continue straight into the Zellertal.
