Steep Forest Path near Vaals

Highlight • Trail

Great trail for hill trail training. It goes up quite a bit and due to the extremely uneven surface it is also important to take each step with concentration (at pace). For those who want an extra challenge, go up here after it has rained for a few days.

Incredibly beautiful area. Don't keep wandering around this historic watermill. Walk into nature for fifteen minutes and you do not know what you see!

Het Onderste en Bovenste Bosch is located south of Eperheide on the top of the western valley wall of the Geuldal. The forest belt continues north of Eperheide and is then called Schweibergerbos. The Onderste Bosch is managed by Staatsbosbeheer while Natuurmonumenten manages the Bovenste Bosch. Here you will find the highest heathland in the Netherlands.

This heathland is not only the highest heathland in the Netherlands, it is also the only one that does not grow on sand. After the calcareous soil eroded away, a thick layer of flint was left behind. The heath itself consists of fairly young heather plants and is lovingly managed. As a result, there is somewhat little variation. Therefore, look for some open spots where you can see the flint. This not only provides an interesting foreground, but immediately shows the specialness of the place. There are three enormous pines on the heath. This is the 'obligatory' eye-catcher in the heath photos you take here.

Cottessergroeve Quarry

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Cottessergroeve is a quarry in a steep wall along the Geul in Cottessen. The quarry was also known as Quartzite quarry or Quarry Wijkerslooth.

Quartzite was mined in this open pit. This quartzite originated in the Namur period of carbon 320-330 million years ago. The stone was broken and shielded at the quarry. It was then delivered to the Chamotte Unie in Geldermalsen for the production of refractory bricks. It was the so-called Dinas stones (fireproof and pebble).

Around 1950 they went underground and drilled a 10 meter long tunnel into the steep wall. Later further tunnels were drilled and the old corridors were filled with rock waste. Extraction was stopped in 1960.

This place is now a nature reserve and geological monument that is owned by Staatsbosbeheer and is open to the public.

The nearby Hoeve Termoere is built with stones from the Cottessergroeve.

Forest Café 't Hijgend Hert

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Boscafé het Hijgend Hert is a household name in the area. In the middle of the Vijlener Forests, it is said, this only mountain hut in the Netherlands. You can go here for excellent food, tasty (large) cakes & pies and an extensive beer list. Het Hijgend Hert is also part of Vijlenerberg Kroegjes Routes, a collection of walking routes through the beautiful hilly landscape of South Limburg in combination with delicious food and drinks.
