Elsborg Historic District

The district of Elsborg came about as a result of the city of Falun's development plan of 1646. The intention was to create a settlement for the many miners from the nearby pit. The houses were built on a slag heap and the rectangular quarters would be strictly regulated with allotted plots and uniform cottages, often with only a living room and kitchen or just a kitchen/dining room. The pit houses were close together, with the gables facing the street.
At the beginning of the 20th century it was not so easy to live in Elsborg. Large families lived close together. Many lived in poor living conditions, but all helped one another as best they could. The children had to fend for themselves very early on and the older children looked after the younger ones.
In the summer of 1761, some town fires devastated large parts of downtown Falun, but Elsborg was spared. So a lot has stayed the same. The streets still show the checkerboard pattern they were given in the 17th century when the district was laid out. There are still many old farm buildings in the courtyards and many of the old mine houses are still on the narrow streets.
