Outside of boating times, definitely take the route south of the lake (unfortunately it doesn't lead along a country road that is so nice), a section of the route to the north is now private and completely closed off, i.e. you can't get through (even if Komoot/OpenStreetMap still shows it differently)

This morning we left Öland without a specific destination in the rain. We drove north and at Söderköping I spontaneously turned east towards the Baltic Sea to see the beginning of the Göta Canal at Mem. We liked it so much here that we looked for a parking space for the night.
