Ungeheuersee

Highlight • Lake

The Ungeheuersee is a flat bog pond, which is fed by the Krumbach. As part of the only raised bog in this low mountain range, the lake has been protected as a natural monument since the 1930s. The name has nothing to do with monsters, but derives from the words "Unger" for forest pasture and "Heyer" for enclosures. A very idyllic place.

A nature trail begins at this overview board (a project by the Palatinate Forest Association Weisenheim/Berg and POLLICHIA) with 6 stations, which you can walk - preferably in a clockwise direction - around the monster lake. (Plate no. 6 explains how the name “Ungeheuersee” came about.) You can find all the display boards and further information about the nature trail here:

The entire moor-like landscape of the Ungeheuersee is a natural landscape that is very worthy of protection, among other things. because of a very rare carnivorous plant (sundew), and should NOT be entered - even and especially not when the lake is dry. That's why there is a special wooden gate around the entire lake!

Ganerbweg at Ungeheuersee

Highlight • Trail

On the northern edge of the Lindemannsruhe hiking car park is the plaque with Otto Wilms' "Pälzer Prayer". There the first sign post with a black ax on a yellow background shows the way into the forest. On firm, partly rocky forest floor, the route leads through sparse forest to the Teufelsmauer, from where it runs parallel to the Leistadt historical circular hiking trail for a stretch. Passing the Teufelsbank you reach the Kanapee (approx. 100m off the main path), then you pass the Leininger Grenzstein and reach the "Soup Bowl" and the Krumholzer Stuhl, an old quarry. We head slightly down the slope towards the Ungeheuersee with the Palatinate Forest Association hut (open: mid-March to mid-November on Sundays and on all public holidays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (November only until 5 p.m.) and from mid-May to mid-October also on Wednesdays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.).
We continue along the edge of the lake, past the Herxheimer Brunnen, now a longer passage slightly uphill until the path meets the Pfälzer Weinsteig. In a southerly direction you now walk towards the Lindemannsruhe again. Shortly before the parking lot (km 6.2) the path leads west, then crosses the state road L518 and leads slightly offset again in a southerly direction to Heidenfels. Here it is worth taking a detour over the rough steps down into the sea of rocks at the foot of the Heidenfels with its impressive rock formations and overhangs.

After a short serpentine-like descent, the path leads without major inclines or declines over narrow paths through quiet mixed forest to the Geiersbrunnen, which was built in honor of the former district manager and later professor of forestry Karl Johann Gayer (*1822 - +1907). After a few 100 meters, the Bismarck Tower comes into view, whose upper viewing floor offers a wonderful 360° panoramic view over the Palatinate Forest and the Rhine plain (from May to October, Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday and on public holidays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., November to April on Sunday and on public holidays 10am-4pm). The attached kiosk offers refreshments and snacks.

From the Bismarck Tower it is only a few steps back to the Lindemannsruhe car park with the Forsthausgaststätte

Except for the last fifth it was a very pleasant tour. Unfortunately, the hiking experience was spoiled at the end by unpleasant encounters with mountain bikers.

I don't know whether the fallen archangel described on the memorial plaque was a mountain biker. After what I experienced today, the assumption is obvious. This section of track is obviously popular as a …

Very nice path that only runs through the forest and is therefore perfect for warm days. If I want to complain at a high level, then I occasionally missed the sound of a brook splashing or the sound of water.
Otherwise, pure nature👍

The tour was recommended by the community for the weekend. The sky was bright blue and the sun was shining – hiking is good for the soul. This was evident in the crowded parking lot near the PWV hut in Weilach. The route leads partially along the Pfälzer Weinsteig and a section along the Ganerbenweg, which I had hiked before. …

Went hiking with my sweetheart today. Without my bike today 😉

Went from the Weilach parking lot up to the Bismarck Tower at Lindemannsruhe, then to the Ungeheuersee lake, where we took a break and had something to eat, then back to the car and finally to the Schützenhaus (shooting club). The food and service were simply amazing. 💪

Today's tour started at the "Forsthaus Weilach" parking lot. From there, there are many hiking options. It's a large parking lot, but it was already very busy. From the parking lot, you walk about 600 meters and you're already at the first PWV hut "in der Weilach." If you'd like, you can take your first break here. From there, the …

2 hike with sister-in-law... 🤗
This time we went from the Weilach to the Laura Hütte. Unfortunately, which are so similar to lavender? Not bloomed yet so it all looked a little bleak.
But there were also many trees lying around on the ground, which generally didn't look that great.
