Chapel of Our Lady of Steenbergen and the Minnebron

Highlight • Religious Site

1652: in the middle of the Meerdaalwoud, Lord van Steenbergen had a chapel built on the spot where a miraculous statue of Mary previously appeared. The statue heals people suffering from swamp fever. Pilgrims flock in. When the French revolutionary armies destroyed churches and monasteries in 1793, local residents were able to save the chapel. Even today you can visit this beautiful Baroque building with a 17th-century interior. With a floor size of 10 by 17 meters and a height of almost 15 meters, it is one of the largest chapels in Flanders. Nearby you will find the very old Minnebron, which has provided clear and pure drinking water since time immemorial. Miraculous healings are also attributed to the source. Source and more information: herita.be/nl/monumenten/kapel-van-steenbergen

If you also want to see the inside and/or attend a celebration, more information at toerismevlaamsbrabant.be/producten/Visits/bezienswaardeheden/kapel-onzelievevrouw-van-steenbergen

Minnebron Spring

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Minnebron is a source managed by the Agency for Nature and Forests. This source is located near the chapel of Our Lady of Steenbergen, on the Zoet Water. People have been coming here to get drinking water since time immemorial. The water quality is checked and posted on a regular basis by the VMM. See also oud-heverlee.be/waterquality-minnebron

There are several sources here but this one has been used this way for a long time. Please note: it can be busy here with people queuing to fill bottles or even large water bottles. Can be reached via a small staircase and side road from the path to the chapel.

There are some well-grown beech trees here, resulting in a bit of a beech cathedral landscape, but, in all honesty, it is still quite minimal. Anyone who knows the Sonian Forest might not want to call this a beech cathedral. Beautiful of course.

A beam quite high above the valley-like sunken road that runs here and is part of the "Tiense Groef", an old Roman road (see komoot.com/nl-nl/highlight/6766575 ) - the thing is completely surrounded by a net and it is quite exciting and fun to cross it - unless you are a paracommando or hiker without fear of heights, perhaps.

Everzwijnbad Play Forest

Highlight • Forest

This play forest was named Everzwijnbad. And sometimes it is a bit of a bath, a mud bath, in some places. But otherwise fun enough, even for those who remained young at heart. In addition to the exciting bridge over the old Roman road, there is a nice mountain with tunnels so that the kids or those who are slim enough can feel like a badger - or something - for a moment, a climbing thing where you can learn everything about annual rings and more playful-educational conditions by the Nature and Forest Agency. Everzwijnbad Play Forest

Highlight • Forest

The Speelbos is part of the beautiful Meerdaal forest. Tucked away in the forest, this alternate play area is dotted with ropes, climbing poles, climbing bridge, puzzle trees and a giant mikado.
