St. Ursanne Stone Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

With the blessing of the bridge saint Nepomuk, a stone structure has been crossing the Doubs near St-Ursanne since 1728.
Apparently, up until the 17th century, the wooden footbridge in St-Ursanne had to be rebuilt after every flood before the stone bridge was built. The four-arched bridge is now a cultural asset of national importance and is protected accordingly.

From the opposite bank you have a great view of the historic town of Saint-Ursanne. A sublime moment when you cross the stone bridge and through the gate into the city.

Saint-Pierre Gate (Saint-Ursanne)

Highlight • Monument

One of the three old city gates of Saint-Ursanne. While some enter the small old town through this gate, for many hikers along the Doubs their tour ends here.

Collegiate Church of St. Ursanne

Highlight • Religious Site

The first church stood here as early as the 11th century. The current building dates from the transition from late Romanesque to Gothic and essential parts were completed in the 12th century.

Hermitage of Saint-Ursanne

Highlight • Religious Site

The ascent to the grotto, where St. Ursicius once lived as a hermit, is not without its challenges. Some very high stone steps lead up steeply and serpentine-like. You have to be good on foot. In front of the grotto is the hermitage chapel, rebuilt in 1621. Right next to it, through an opening carved in the rock, one can see down on the collegiate church, the monastery and part of the town. From here, a very narrow path leads further up the hill to the fortified tower and the ruins of Saint-Ursanne Castle, which towered high above the town. Beautifully carved wooden plaques accompany the hiker along the way, providing information about the life of Saint Ursicius. Danger! The path is really narrow in places and only suitable for sure-footed people.

St. Ursanne Town Wall Tower

Highlight • Monument

This fortified tower was once the connecting link between the Chateau Saint-Ursanne and the town of the same name and lying far below it. Unfortunately, the castle burned down almost completely a few hundred years ago, leaving only the tower and part of the city wall intact. The tower is not easy to reach and sure-footedness is required. Access to the tower is only granted to those who purchase a digital key from the tourist office for a small fee. This can then be used for several sights at the same time. The city wall attached to the tower is also impressive. High, steep and covered with foxtail bricks, it stretches almost vertically from the town up to the tower.
