199 Steps, Whitby

Highlight • Historical Site

Climbing the 199 Steps in Whitby is a legendary thing to do. The challenge might get you puffing a little, but it is worth it as you are treated to incredible sweeping views over Whitby and the sea. Along the way, you can visit Grade I-listed St Mary's Church and, at the top, you reach the magnificent Whitby Abbey, the inspiration behind Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’.

Whitby Harbour

Highlight • Historical Site

Whitby is a traditional seaside town that is dearly loved by young and old alike. With a glorious golden beach, quirky cobbled streets that wind enticingly through old taverns and pubs — frequented by sailors and smugglers in times gone by — and a bustling harbour overlooked by the striking Gothic ruins of Whitby Abbey, it is an intriguing and beautiful place. With connections to Captain Cook and Dracula, too, Whitby truly is a place unlike any other.

Wonderful sight: the remains of the abbey rising up from the horizon.

Black Nab

Highlight • Natural Monument

Bit of confusion going on here. This is actually Black Nab, which looks like a submarine conning tower at high tide, as as the tide slowly ebbs, it looks as if a submarine's casing is appearing. Some of the photos in this highlight do look like a profile view of a whale, but that is Saltwick Nab which is a couple hundred metres further north.

Whitby High Lighthouse

Highlight • Monument

Whitby High Lighthouse (called this on Admiralty Charts to distinguish it from the two lighthouses in Whitby) is still in operation by Trinity House and was automated in the 1990s, hence the keeper's cottage is now available as a holiday let.

Cleveland Way: Maw Wyke to Robin Hood's Bay

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This little stretch of the coastal path is absolutely magnificent. High on the cliffs and right on the edge, you're afforded beautiful views out to sea on one side and glorious countryside on the other side. With rocky crags and beaches below, and with hawthorn and cow parsley blowing in the sea breeze, it's easy to see why they call Yorkshire 'God’s own County'.
