Marlow Town Centre

Highlight • Settlement

Marlow is a vibrant Georgian market town situated within pretty scenery besides the River Thames. Its historic streets have many restaurants, cafes, pubs, shops, and places to stay. Famous residents have included T.S. Eliot, and Mary Shelley, who finished her Gothic masterpiece Frankenstein while living in the town. Marlow is also home to one of Britain’s most prestigious rowing clubs and has produced many Olympic rowers, including Sir Steve Redgrave, whose statue stands in Higginson Park.

Pullingshill Wood is a picturesque beech woodland which is home to the rare ghost orchid. Interestingly, the site was used to train troops before WWI and you can still observe the ditches and trenches used for such purposes.

Higginson Park

Highlight • Rest Area

The park is the principal open space in Marlow, a classic example of a traditional urban park.
It is located on the High Street and yet it also benefits from access to open countryside and a superb location on the River Thames.

The park offers refreshments to cyclists in the form of a café, public toilets and a fountain to refill your bottles.

St Peter's Church, Marlow

Highlight • Religious Site

The first new Catholic church built in Buckinghamshire since the Reformation, designed by the great 19th-century architect, Augustus Welby Pugin. It opened in 1846.

An interesting relic said to be the mummified hand of St. James the Apostle is said to be preserved at the church. This relic had been in the keeping of the Reading Abbey until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century. It passed through many vicissitudes after that, until it was purchased by Scott Murray in 1856 for his private chapel at Danesfield. It was finally brought to the church of St Peter when the estate was sold.
