Hainewalde Moated Castle

Highlight • Castle

The impressive baroque palace Hainewalde is apparently deserted in the large garden. In fact, the castle has been renovated piece by piece by a home club for several years. All repairs are financed exclusively with donations and all employees work as volunteers.

Church of St. Peter and Paul, Varnsdorf

Highlight • Religious Site

The Baroque Church of Saints Peter and Paul was built on the site of an earlier church, which was supposedly built in the 13th century and stood until 1740[1]. In that year, a lightning strike damaged the tower and organ to such an extent that the entire building threatened to collapse. After negotiations, construction of the new church began in 1765 in such a way that the old church's interior was preserved. The foundation stone of the new church was laid on 26 June 1766, the day of Peter and Paul. Construction was completed in 1777, as evidenced by the year in the coat of arms of the Liechtenstein family.

In 1829, the church also burned down as a result of a fire at the Bursa Hotel next to the church. The roof and tower collapsed, the bells melted, the organ and the chandelier were destroyed. Citizens of Varnsdorf quickly repaired the church, so that Beethoven's Missa solemnis could be premiered here in 1830. In 1894, the parish church was elevated to a deanery church. The church clock also dates from this year. In 1904, the new, late-romantic organ, built by organ master Hermann Eule from Bautzen, was installed in the church.

The church bells were replaced several times because they were requisitioned for military purposes during the war. The current five bells were brought from Bavaria on April 3, 1969 by the brothers Alfred and Erich Ludwig from Mering (near Augsburg) as a gift for the town of Varnsdorf. The bells were consecrated by Bishop Štěpán Maria Trochta of Leitmeritz on April 20, 1969 after Holy Mass in the presence of a large crowd on the market square.
