St John the Evangelist Church, Bury

Highlight • Religious Site

St John the Evangelist, a Grade I Listed church, is perched on high ground close to the River Arun in Bury. Following the Norman conquest, the parish of Bury was given to the abbey of Fécamp in Normandy. It seems likely, therefore, that the present church was built under the direction of the abbey. Certainly the tower and nave are 12th century, and the south aisle dates from about 1200. The most noticeable feature on approaching St John’s is the broad shingled spire. It is believed this was built when the church roof was restored in 1603.

St Michael's Church, Amberley

Highlight • Religious Site

This twelfth century church is adjacent to Amberley Castle, the hunting lodge of the medieval bishops of Chichester until the seventeenth century. It has a large Norman chancel arch and early English windows. There are medieval wall paintings and a monumental brass of a local MP who died in 1424. Arthur Rackham, the illustrator, is commemorated in a wall plaque in the churchyard.

Amberley Wildbrooks

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The Amberley Wildbrooks is a stunning expanse of marshes and and grasslands in Sussex. The area is criss-crossed with historic ditches and serves as a floodplain but mostly, it's a thriving habitat for birds and butterflies.

There's a footpath running north–south through the middle and another along its eastern edge – both provide peaceful walks. The River Arun flows around the western edge.
