Dreiborn Plateau

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Dreiborn plateau in the Eifel National Park is a unique ecosystem with a mixture of open land, heathland, forests and species-rich meadows. Due to decades of military use, the area remained largely untouched by intensive agriculture, allowing many rare animal and plant species to survive.

In August 2024, several wolves were confirmed in the national park region around Schleiden, including by photographs.

A very important "rule of the game" when hiking across the Dreiborn plateau (and of course also for the other parts of the Eifel National Park and other protected areas): Always stay on the paths. If you simply walk "back and forth" through the fields and meadows, you are destroying the very nature that we can admire and enjoy here.

Anyone familiar with the often large forest areas or agricultural land from their hikes in the Eifel will be surprised and certainly overwhelmed by the Dreiborn plateau. From personal experience, I can only recommend visiting it in the most diverse seasons, because this area unfolds its very own charm at any time of the year.

View of the Dreiborn Plateau

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Dreiborn Plateau is an open upland landscape and part of the national park. It lies at an altitude of approximately 500 meters between the valleys of the Rur, Urft, and Olef rivers and is characterized by expansive meadows, heathland, and scattered wooded areas. From 1946 to 2006, the area served as a military training ground and consequently remained largely uninhabited for a long period. Since the establishment of the national park, the plateau has been accessible via designated trails. Today, it serves as a nature reserve, providing habitat for numerous animal and plant species as well as offering panoramic views.
