Former Nike missile site, Billiger Wald

The Billiger Forest contains a military training area and a Bundeswehr firing range.
Parts of the forest were cleared and reclaimed between 1949 and 1950 by the five farming families who had settled there. The first houses were built in 1949 by the then "Rheinisches Heim" settlement company. In 1960, the settler plots were sold to the families who had settled there. Today, this settlement is called Billiger Wald, where the descendants of the former settler families live. However, this settlement is not associated with the town of Billig, but rather with Euenheim.
A military facility (Nike Position) was also built there, where nuclear warheads were stored. The Belgian military was stationed in the outer ring of this facility, and the American military in the inner ring. At another location in the Billiger Forest, the Belgian military stored ammunition and maintained a radar station. In the early 1980s, the Belgian military abandoned these properties. The former missile base no longer houses any weapons systems. The grounds and buildings are used by the Bundeswehr, the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW), and the fire department for training exercises.
