Steps at Rosedale Wyke

Highlight • Trail

Unbelievably beautiful and dramatic views down the coast at Rosedale Wyke (particularly towards Port Mulgrave to the north). The visuals are helped by a number of steps on the cliffs here; there is even a bench to sit on nearby to enjoy the views. One of the points on the entire Cleveland Way.

View of Port Mulgrave

Highlight • Beach

Port Mulgrave is a fascinating place for industrial heritage buffs, and apparently there is a wealth of fossils thereabouts too. In bygone days it was an ironstone mine and port with miners cottages set around a mine shaft that went down several hundred feet. The mine has been closed off now, it is derelict, and there are only a variety of locally constructed fishing huts in the port area.

Port Mulgrave Industrial Heritage

Highlight • Monument

Port Mulgrave was historically known as Rosedale however its name was changed to avoid any confusion that could be caused by the already existing ironstone mines and ironworks at Rosedale in the middle of the North York Moors. Renamed Port Mulgrave after the landowner the Earl of Mulgrave. Lots more interesting info at en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Mulgrave,_North_Yorkshire

View of Far Rosedale Cliffs

Highlight • Viewpoint

Terrific views from next to Far Rosedale (a building just north of Port Mulgrave): from here, looking to the south-east, you can make out the cliffs of Kettleness in the far distance.

Cracking views of Staithes and its characteristic harbour after rounding Old Nab from the south.

Staithes Village and Harbour

Highlight • Settlement

Steep descent into Staithes from the Cleveland Way to the south, but well worth it to see the town's fabulous river estuary and harbour. Gigaro's photo of the geese - they were still there when I passed through :). They don't like hikers, hissing and squawking, or maybe it was just me... 😃

Staithes Fishing Village

Highlight • Historical Site

As you wander through the winding streets of Staithes and down to the traditional bay, it really feels as though time has stood still for hundreds of years. Much more peaceful than its larger neighbours to the south, Whitby and Scarborough, it’s a picture-postcard fishing village that’s sure to capture your imagination. With spectacular cliff-top paths, a small yet glorious golden beach and rock pools, it’s a serene spot that’s well worth a visit.
