The Sunnyhurst Pub

Highlight • Pub

The Sunnyhurst pub is often frequented by hikers who have tackled the nearby objective of Darwen Tower or been for an amble in the beautiful Sunnyhurst Woods. It's a classic Lancastrian country pub, serving real ales from the local Thwaites Brewery. It's a dog and family-friendly establishment, though note that food is served during the weekends only.

Earnsdale Reservoir

Highlight • Viewpoint

Earnsdale reservoir (Dean) is situated in the shadow of Darwen Tower, close to Sunnyhurst wood, which is a beautiful 85-acre wooded valley and is a beautiful location for family walks and picnics. The reservoir offers excellent bank fishing and is one where anglers and expect good sport using a variety of methods.

You have a nice view across Earnsdale Reservoir over towards the Jubilee Tower, or Darwen Tower, from here. The tower was built to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria way back in 1897. The tower stands tall on Darwen Hill against a backdrop of lush green and wooded countryside.

The Royal Arms, Ryal Fold

Highlight • Restaurant

Fab country pub with outdoor seating for the summer and a wood fire place in winter. I have not tried the food there but the real ale was excellent.

Darwen Tower (Jubilee Tower)

Highlight • Monument

Built in 1898 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, Darwen Tower (often referred to as Jubilee Tower) stands proud at 85 feet (26 m) in height on top of Darwen Hill, which is already 1,220 feet (372 m) above sea level.

It is a popular objective for hikers, which is fitting because it was also built to celebrate a victory in the local people's fight to gain access to the moorland. There's an internal staircase that allows walkers to climb the tower.

From the very top, the views are unsurprisingly stupendous. On a clear day, the mountains of the Lake District can be seen, as well as Morecambe Bay, Blackpool Tower, the Isle of Man and North Wales. Of course, closer at hand stretch the wild moorlands of the West Pennines.
