Kilburn White Horse Car Park

Highlight • Natural Monument

This is a lovely place to stop. There is typically the ice cream and tea/coffee van here, so you should be able to get a snack. There are a few benches provided from which you will be able to admire the massive Kilburn White Horse on the slopes above. Near where the van is typically parked, you will see the steep steps beginning the way up to the Horse.

A moving memorial is to be found here to all the allied nations' aircrews who lost their lives during WW2, but also specifically to the crew of Halifax bomber JD105 10sqn Melbourne who crashed nearby in 1943.

There is something additionally evocative about this particular memorial, with the far-reaching commanding views of the countryside below and of the Yorkshire Dales in the far distance from Sutton Bank here.

On the 5th May 1943, Halifax JD105 was returning to the airfield from Germany and flying through fog. The plane clipped the edge of Hood Hill and crash landed, resulting in the deaths of five out of the eight airmen on aboard. Here, you can find a memorial to the airmen.

A North York Moors National Park visitor centre, cafe and information centre. Start your walk here and pick up one of the local walking trails maps or use the facilities and plan your own adventure. Entry to the centre is free and anything you buy from the shop or cafe helps support the work the national park authority do.

View from Sutton Bank

Highlight • Viewpoint

It's widely regarded as one of the best viewpoints in England, offering a breathtaking panorama that stretches for miles.

On a clear day, you can see the stunning view of the Vale of York and the Yorkshire Dales. The view is particularly beautiful in the autumn, when the leaves turn golden, creating a stunning contrast with the rugged landscape.

For those seeking a peaceful retreat in the midst of nature, Sutton Bank's view is a must-visit destination in England.

Yorkshire Gliding Club

Highlight • Viewpoint

Iconic landmark on the plateau above Roulston Scar near Sutton Bank. Founded in 1934, the Yorkshire Gliding Club boasts a fascinating history and once included Amy Johnson as a member. Plenty of benches along the Cleveland Way where you can stop and watch when flying is taking place.

View from Roulston Scar

Highlight (Segment) • Natural Monument

One of these "I am so glad I am alive" views from here. From Roulston Scar on Sutton Bank, to the north you can admire Hambleton Hills, and to the west, past the wooded Hood Hill, over the countryside down below you can see (on clear days) all the way to the Yorkshire Dales. A stunning, unforgettable placce.

Kilburn White Horse

Highlight • Historical Site

Kilburn White Horse is one of the most famous landmarks in North Yorkshire. The turf-cut figure, the most northerly of its kind in Britain, is 314 feet (96 m) long and 220 feet (67 m) high and dates from 1857.

When you are above the White Horse it is difficult to get a sense of its enormous scale so it is worth following the steps down to view it from below.
