Buttermere Village

Highlight • Viewpoint

Buttermere is an achingly beautiful village in the western Lake District. Situated between Crummock Water and Buttermere and sitting in the shadow of many superb fells, the permutations for walks are many and varied. It caters for hikers very well, with two pubs, a couple of cafes, a youth hostel, a campsite and holiday cottages.

Its beauty is such that, despite its remote location, it is immensely popular with families, walkers and hikers. The roads around the village are notoriously narrow and bendy and jams are common. Try to avoid peak times and public holidays to get the most out of the place.

St James' Church, Buttermere

Highlight • Historical Site

At the foot of the Newlands Pass watching over the village of Buttermere, is St James' Church. The original chapel dates from 1507, whilst the building in its current form was built in 1840. Ever the poet, Wordsworth once said of the place: ‘A man must be very unsensible who would not be touched at the sight of the chapel of Buttermere’.

Newlands Pass Climb from Buttermere

Highlight (Segment) • Mountain Pass

This is a great little climb, with steep sections at the start and the end. Fantastic views along the way if you have the energy to notice them. This is also a climb that features in the Fred Whitton sportive, and worth ticking off your list if you have not done it before, or one that you can enjoy again and again. You can fit this into a route which includes various other climbs as it sits between Honister Pass and Whinlatter Pass. There is also a great little cafe (Croft House Farm Cafe) at the start of the climb in Buttermere if you need an energy boost before taking it on.

13% incline on one side and 25% on the other. . but the view is worth it. Cycle towards Buttermere (there is less incline there)
