Gorgast Manor House

Highlight • Historical Site

The Gorgast Commandery was a branch of the Order of St. John in what was then the Lebus District of the Margraviate of Brandenburg. In 1810/11, the Order of St. John was dissolved in Brandenburg, the estates were nationalized, and Gorgast became a royal Prussian domain. In 1840, the manor house was built on the foundations of the former order house by the Rosenstiel family. Gustav von Rosenstiel was a royal district judge, district deputy, and dike captain of the Oderbruch region (1876–1888) and was married to Clara, the daughter of Gustav Wahnschaffe, the previous tenant. Until its expropriation in 1945, the Rosenstiel family was the large tenant of the castle and estate.

Between 1945 and 1990, the Gorgast manor house (also known as the castle) was used as a school, vocational training center, and daycare center.

War Memorial Gorgast

The memorial is located in the Gorgast church cemetery. It consists of a square stone column on a square base, crowned by an eagle. The names of World War I victims are carved on two of the long sides (now completely illegible). On the other two sides, symbolically depict a sword and a steel helmet with oak leaves. Metal plaques bearing the inscription "In remembrance of the fallen, displaced persons, political prisoners, and mine victims of World War II," as well as the names of the victims of World War II, were subsequently attached to the short sides.

Gorgast Village Church
