Loch Muick

Highlight • Lake

Loch Muick is a fantastic place to visit and there are several options for a walk, cycle or perhaps even a paddle.

For Mountain walkers, the White Mount Munros takes you on a loop high above it, with spectacular views back down to the loch and beyond. For those looking for something flatter, there is a path all the way around the loch, taking about 3 hours to walk.

The loch has a large car park and toilets, though on busy summer days and weekends, it can be full as early as 9am.

Glas-allt-Shiel Bothy

Highlight • Mountain Hut

To find the entrance to the bothy is a little tricky. It is located between the buildings. Follow the dark(er) alley at the east side of the main building to the only accessible part of the mansion. The bothy offers a room with a large table and two bunkbeds at the ground floor and space for around four to five people in the attic.

There is a fireplace and you might find some (wet) wood and saws. The toilet is a few feet away in the adjacent building. It is primitive with a hole in the ground and two buckets to flush. The flowing stream next to the bothy is a decent water source.

Glasallt Falls

Highlight • Viewpoint

This is an impressive 160-foot (50 m) waterfall near the head of Loch Muick. It's a steep and, in some places, challenging path to the falls. However, in fine weather, and especially after heavy rain, it's well worth the effort.

Taking its name from the lochan set like a dark gem in the spectacular steep-sided corrie, Lochnagar is a mountain defined by the steep and clefted cliffs that surround its watery namesake. Located within the Balmoral Estate, its top is pointed and proud, and one of the most celebrated Munro summits.

Càrn a' Choire Bhoidheach Summit

Highlight • Viewpoint

Quite straightforward to access from Lochnagar. There is a small path to the summit. Hopefully you are lucky enough to enjoy the views.

You can access Carn an t-Sagairt Mor from Callater Stables and once you are up here, enjoy the stunning views (if the weather is nice) and try to bagg as many munros as possible. There are quite a few all around you with just tiny ups and downs to get to the summits.

Cairn Bannoch

Highlight • Viewpoint

Cairn Bannoch is a 1,012 meters Munro mountain in the southern Cairngorms in the Scottish Highlands. It's often climbed as part of a circuit of Lochnagar hills (five Munros to the west of Loch Muick).

We started and finished at the Glas Allt Shiel bothy. The area has been a favourite of the royal family since Victorian times.

Broad Cairn Summit

Highlight • Viewpoint

Broad Cairn is a rocky Munro summit above Loch Muick in Royal Deeside. Sitting above undulating grassy plains and amongst other Munro peaks, the descent down Broad Cairn's boulderfield will test tired legs.
