Harcles Hill Cairn, Holcombe Moor

Highlight • Natural Monument

Harcles Hill on Holcombe Moor stands at 371m. It's an area owned and managed by the National Trust who are embarking on a peat land restoration project. Restoration of this land reduces the soil carbon loss and helps trap CO2 in the ground. It will also reduce flood problems downstream of the moorland by increasing the grounds ability to hold water and slowing the time it takes for runoff to reach the streams and rivers.

This is possibly the grandest viewpoint on the Rossendale Way, a medium-distance trail that circumnavigates this beautiful borough.

The vista is extensive on a clear day. In the north are Tor Hill, Cribden, Pendle Hill, Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent. Meanwhile, Cowpe Lowe and Black Hill rise in the east. The large towns of Rochdale and Bury can also be spied.

Buckden Wood

Highlight • Natural Monument

An enchanting stretch of woodland that ascends into the moors from the industrial village of Stubbins. A series of cascades accompanies you through the wood, their soothing sound the perfect remedy if you have just come down from the windswept moors.
