View of Riber Castle from Pic Tor

Highlight • Castle

Riber Castle is an interesting place with a chequered history. Built as a house for a wealthy industrialist, it has since been used as a a boys school and then a zoo which closed in 2000 due to concerns for the welfare of the animals kept there.

Matlock War Memorial and Cemetery

Highlight • Historical Site

Founded in the Middle Ages the church, along with eight others in Derbyshire, was dedicated to St Giles.

The south porch was added in 1636. The south aisle was rebuilt in 1760, and the north aisle rebuilt in 1763 by Sir Richard Arkwright. Arkwright was initially buried at this church before his remains were removed to the family chapel (now St Mary's Church, Cromford) near the home he began for himself at Willersley Castle after the latter building's completion in 1797.

Hall Leys Park, Matlock

Highlight • Settlement

An attractive town on the edge of the Peak District National Park, Matlock has a lot going for it. It rose to prominence in the 19th century, when John Smedley developed the town as a desirable spa destination.

Today it makes for a great base for exploring the national park. There's some lovely walks to the south around Matlock Bath too, where High Tor and the Heights of Abraham boast sublime views. A host of amenities and accommodation can be found in the town, with many of its cafes, pubs, restaurants and independent shops clustered around Dale Road and Crown Square.
