Steel Fell summit

Highlight • Viewpoint

The central apex of three ridges, Steel Fell is a distinctive and intimidating presence to the south of Thirlmere. It is most commonly accessed from Dunmail Raise via a steep clamber up its eastern face or from Grasmere along its more accommodating south east ridge.

Gibson Knott

Highlight • Viewpoint

Gibson Knott is a Wainwright in the Central Fells of the Lake District National Park. At 1,385 feet (422 m), it's hardly a towering mountain but with views like this it doesn't need to be. It's commonly hiked when walkers link Helm Crag with Calf Crag. Gibson Knott itself is a series of lumps and bumps along a wide ridge that falls away either side between the Far Easedale valley and the Greenburn valley.

Helm Crag summit

Highlight • Summit

Helm Crag summit is quite a unique Wainwright top. It forms the southeastern section of a nice rambling ridge that includes a trio of Wainwrights, including Calf Crag and Gibson Knott. Whilst not very high, it has a dramatic rocky summit area known as 'The Lion and the Lamb' and a slabbed shark-fin slab of rock called 'The Howitzer', which is the true summit of Helm Crag. The Howitzer can be a real scrambling test, but it is not for the faint-hearted. There are fantastic views to be had from here looking down over Grasmere village and lake.

You can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the picturesque Grasmere village and surrounding fells from this spot just below Helm Crag. The vibrant colors of the landscape change with the seasons providing a perfect backdrop for appreciating the beauty of the Lake District.

January 17, 2023,Dead Pike, Calf Crag, Gibson Knott & Helm Crag ❄️🏔️🚐
No idea why I apparently walked in a straight line to Helm crag, it deffo wasnt a straight line 🤣🌬️
A great hike in perfect conditions, slow going across Gibson Knott as it's all up and down but Helm Crag is a favourite.
We were staying in Grasmere so decided to do a little walk around some of the local fells. We didn't climb the Howitzer - it was way too windy and if even Wainwright himself didn't manage it, I can live with that!
Last minute plans are the best! Work on my guidebook is going well so I treated myself to an afternoon off to play in the snow today. Jess and I met at 1.30pm and hiked this loop of Steel Fell, Calf Crag, Gibson Knott and Helm Crag. Donuts fueled the walk and a snowman cheered us along 😄
