The Abbey Inn (former Darley Abbey monastery building)

Highlight • Pub

Darley Abbey in Derbyshire was an Augustinian monastery just north of Derby. Around it formed the village now bearing its name Darley Abbey village.

There are only two remaining buildings from the monastic period. One became the Abbey Pub (also known as the Abbey Inn), a Grade II* listed building. Constructed in the 15th century, it is thought to have been part of the Abbot's residence. The building appears to have been roofless for most of its post-dissolution life; a new roof was added in the 1920s and the building reinforced in the 1950s following some movement within the walls. The building was renovated to its present state in 1978.

Tarmac Pathways in Markeaton Park

Highlight (Segment) • Rest Area

Great tarmac paths in Markeaton Park that are good for families. Can take a circular route and good for bikes, scooters and other vehicles that benefit from a great surface. I have used for training on a Brompton which, because of its small wheels, really benefits from a smooth surface. Maybe the best surface in Derby?

The woodland path at Markeaton Park provides a beautifully colourful backdrop to your run at certain times of the year.

Markeaton Park

Highlight • Cafe

Markeaton Park is the most visited park in the Deby area attracting over one million visitors per year. It's about 207 acres.
The Mundy family owned the area from 1516 until they gave the park to Derby council in the early 20th century.

The Orangery Café, Markeaton Park

Highlight • Historical Site

Orangery that is now a cafe. Previously part of Markeaton Hall (now demolished). The orangery and other outbuildings survive and there is a series of small craft businesses in the outbuildings. The cafe is okay (no better) and there are 2 other cafes very close by (to the west on Markeaton Lane). The one at the Markeaton Garden Centre (The Potting Shed) is recommended over the others.
