The numerous historic half-timbered houses from the 16th and 17th centuries are noteworthy. The majority are gabled, three-aisled, longitudinal plank houses. They are complemented by representatives of the two-aisled variant, especially on Lange Straße.

Many of the residential buildings from the Renaissance (second half of the 16th century) are characterized by their figurative carvings and inscriptions. At Lange Straße 93, as well as at Kirchplatz 1, there are houses with carvings of biblical scenes from around 1559-1560. At Lange Straße 29 and Mönchstraße 8, however, you can admire fan rosettes and mythical creatures on the facades of the houses. They date from around 1575-1576.

In the 17th century, these carvings were noticeably reduced. Houses built after 1600 show fewer decorations and dispense with figurative representations. Probably the oldest half-timbered house in the historic town centre of Rheda-Wiedenbrück is located at Lange Straße 60 with parts dating back to 1471.

In the district of Gütersloh, in the Wiedenbrück district of Rheda-Wiedenbrück, there is the Catholic St. Ursula Church. It is looked after by the Franciscans of the attached monastery. For this reason, the people of Wiedenbrück also call it the Franciscan Church or the Father's Church. The name St. Ursula Church is rarely used anymore.

In 1470, today's St. Ursula Church was built on the remains of a church from the 12th century. At the beginning of the 17th century, it was used by the Jesuits.

The church was given to the Franciscans by the Prince-Bishop of Osnabrück from 1644 onwards.

In 1740, the confessional chapel and the sacristy were added.

By decision of the Reich government, all bronze bells were confiscated for the armaments industry in 1940/1942. Only the smallest bell (Klepp bell from 1645) remained in the church. It was the only church bell in all of Wiedenbrück until after the war.

In 2008, a comprehensive interior renovation took place. The exterior renovation followed two years later. The church forecourt was redesigned in 2010/2011.

St. Aegidius Church, Wiedenbrück

Highlight • Religious Site

The church has been a religious center of Upper Emsland for over 1000 years. From time to time, the church was constantly renovated and expanded.
During the Thirty Years' War it was besieged and shelled - on closer inspection you can still see a cannonball attached to the church as a memorial.
The most recent renovations date back to 2006, some of which were harshly criticized for the recent redesign of the west wall and organ stage using large-scale steel and wood panels. On the other hand, however, were also praised because of the image of the present generation in a contemporary shape without historicizing Anbiederung.

After a "hibernation", about 80 "everyday people" of the artist Christel Lechner were repositioned at 24 locations in Wiedenbrück. Every year from March to September, the "everyday people" shape the cityscape.
