Horse defends foal against bull

Highlight • Monument

Alfons Van Meirvenne studied at the Academy in Sint-Niklaas from 1947 to 1950. He was trained there by Georges Fonteyne and Robert Van De Velde. A year later he started his studies at the National Higher Institute for Fine Arts in Antwerp, where he became a laureate in 1959. He participates in several national and international exhibitions. These exhibitions are often reasons for winning several prizes, including the Grand Prix of Rome in 1961.
The sculpture in the park of Castle Cortewalle shows a horse defending a foal against a bull. The size of this work suggests a true-to-life sculpture. By interweaving these animals, the sculpture emphasizes the intensive fight between them and also gives the sculpture more dynamic power. In this sculpture, Alfons Van Meirvenne expresses his interest in nature, which gives him inspiration for several sculptures.
This work was restored in 2017 by Bronsatelier Buysse (Meengracht 8 – 9620 Zottegem)

Poems on the wall

Highlight • Monument

Anton van Wilderode published his poem Cortewalle in 1974 in I breathe my own earth, fifty Waasland poems. He describes the park and castle in the period of vacancy after the death of the last resident and before the first restoration. The poem Cortewalle in the poet's handwriting hangs to the right of the fireplace in the Verlatzaal, the large salon on the ground floor of the castle. The poem Cortewalle inspired many other poets, composers and illustrators. In collaboration with the International Circle of Friends Anton van Wilderode, the vzw Gemeentelijk Cultuurcentrum Beveren published several publications with translations of this poem. The last collection dates from 2016. It was designed and illustrated by students of illustrative design from the Municipal Academy Sint-Niklaas (teacher Tim Polfliet).
On the occasion of the commemoration of Anton van Wilderode born 100 years ago, Jan Van Landeghem composed a musical creation inspired by the poem and the poems on this wall were revealed.
The three haikus were written on the occasion of that commemoration by Herman Van Rompuy, President Emeritus European Union, Minister of State, President European Policy Center, at the request of the International Circle of Friends Anton van Wilderode.
prof. em. Mark Eyskens, Minister of State, former Prime Minister and former chairman of the International Circle of Friends Anton van Wilderode suggested that he also write a poem for this occasion. It became Cortewalle's willow.
The poems Cortewalle by Anton van Wilderode, De wilg van Cortewalle by Mark Eyskens and three haiku by Herman Van Rompuy were unveiled on 15 June 2018 on the occasion of the festive commemoration of Anton van Wilderode's birth 100 years ago.
