The ducking stool was used as a tool to determine if someone was a witch. Between 17th - 19th century they were commonly used throughout England and Scotland.

The witch would be placed on the stool and dunked into the water. If they drowned they were innocent and if they survived the drowning they were a witch and would then be killed.

However sometimes they just threw them in the water and see if they would drown.

St. Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The Catholic Church of St. Thomas of Canterbury is a beautiful parish church built in the Gothic Revival style between 1874 and 1875. The church is located on the corner of Burgate and Canterbury Lane, opposite the famous Canterbury Cathedral. It is the only Roman Catholic church in Canterbury and contains the relics of Thomas Becket. The church was built on the site of a medieval chapel, of which the tower has been preserved. The interior of the church is richly decorated, including an impressive rose window above the altar and a baptismal font dating from 1865.
