Knossos Palace

Highlight • Historical Site

If you are on Crete you have to see Knossos.
Guided tours quite expensive (in addition to the entrance fee), but you can also do Knossos without a guide. On days when there is not much going on, the guides will even agree to half the price.
Even the guides openly doubt the authenticity of the site, but not everything came from Arthur Evans' imagination.
After our tour, I went through the facility again for photos and saw other tours. Other guides sometimes tell different details.

The port of Heraklion, also known as the Venetian port, is the historic port of the island's capital. Very beautiful with its small fishing boats and the small fish market, as well as the Venetian fortress Koules, which was built in the 16th century and located at the harbor entrance. The Venetian area (old warehouse) is in the immediate vicinity. From the harbor you can get directly into the streets of the old town and the Archaeological Museum. View of the Koules fortress and the harbor with the many fishing boats. The ferry and industrial port with a cruise ship terminal is further east.

Venetian Shipyards of Heraklion

Highlight • Historical Site

In the port of Heraklion, we still see a part of the shipyards (arsenals), which consist of large elongated cupolas. These are the shipyards of the Venetians, where they have housed, stored, built and repaired their ships.

Each dome was designed for a galley and there were three different complexes of 19 shipyards built in different chronological periods. The complexes were: Arsenali Antichi, Arsenali Vechi and Arsenali Nuovi.

Today we only see parts of five shipyards (4 from Vechi and 1 from Nuovi). The rest was totally destroyed during the construction of the coastal road in the early 20th century.

South and next to the Nuovi shipyard we can still see the large water tank of Zane with a capacity of 20,000 barrels. On the other side, to the west, we see the salt deposit, where the Venetians stored the precious salt that is traded throughout Europe.
