Holy Trinity Basilica, Bern

Highlight • Religious Site

Trinity Basilica, Bern
The Trinity Church was built 120 years ago, from 1896-1899.
On December 4, 1898, the keys were handed over and the church was consecrated by Pastor Jakob Stammler.
On Trinity Sunday, June 18, 1899, the church was consecrated to the Holy Trinity by Leonhard Haas, Bishop of Basel and Lugano, in a large ceremony.
The church was built in the Lombard Romanesque style. The church tower is 45 meters high.
Pope Pius XII. appointed the Trinity Church a "Basilica minor" on April 6, 1956.
Basilica minor ("smaller basilica") has been a special honorary title that the Pope has given to an important church building since the 18th century. This title highlights the special importance of the church for the region. It also promotes the strengthening of the unity of Christians with the church in Rome. The identifying mark, the attribute of a basilica, is an umbrella. This can be seen at the main entrance to the church - with the year it was named a basilica.
This church was built as a place of prayer, refueling and to honor God.
We hope that you will experience a moment of encouragement and strengthening during your visit.

Marzili Funicular

Highlight • Structure

Marzilibahn Funicular, Bern
In 66 seconds between the Aare and the upper town (just below the Federal Palace)
The Marzilibahn was opened in 1885 under the name Drahtseilbahn Aarziele. It connects the Marzili district with the Bundes-Terrasse. Construction began on March 3, 1895, and the Marzilibahn was already running on July 18, 1895, one day before the start of the Federal Shooting Festival. Unbelievable when compared to today's construction times.
Water ballast was the drive. The water came from the Berner Stadtbach and was located in an underground reservoir north of the mountain station. The driver on the downhill car could control the speed using a hand crank via the braking cogwheel running in the central rack. In case of overspeed, an emergency stop was triggered, which could also be activated manually. Filling the water tank took 7.5 minutes, which led to waiting times. In 1929, an injector was installed, which reduced the filling time to 45 seconds.
On September 23, 1973, the old Marzilibähnli ran for the last time. The water ballast railway was converted into a motor-driven funicular with an Abt turn. Commissioning was on April 5, 1974. One old water ballast car is located at the Marzili valley station, the other at the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne.
In the winter of 2014/2015, a fundamental modernization took place. The focus is on a new steel structure along the entire route. Modern rooms and workshops for the staff were created in the mountain station. The Marzilibahn has been running again since May 1, 2015.
This funicular completes an average of 330 journeys per day. This is a Swiss record for funiculars. The Marzilibahn transports over 1,000,000 passengers per year.

Kleine Schanze Park

Highlight • Rest Area

Kleine Schanze Park, Bern – dating back to the 17th century

The fortifications, consisting of the Grosse Schanze (Great Fort) and the Kleine Schanze (Little Fort), are part of Bern's last city fortifications in the west of the Old Town, dating from the 17th century. When they no longer served a defensive purpose, they were transformed into parkland in several stages.

The Kleine Schanze, with its adjacent park café, offers the public a climate-adapted and almost barrier-free recreational area in the heart of the city. The park's popularity is being addressed with additional seating and more lawn space.
