Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Fountains

Highlight • Religious Site

Legend has it that an eight-year-old deaf-mute boy, Abel, wandered away from home before 1687 and got lost in the swamps of the area. He was searched in vain, unable to hear the calls, he spent the night outside. The next day
he was able to hear the calls and spoke, no longer being deaf or mute. He said he had spent the night in the company of a peasant woman who had made a fountain flow to quench his thirst.
After this miracle, devotion to the Madonna delle Fontane began.

Church of San Francesco (Lodi)

Highlight • Religious Site

The church of San Francesco, dating from the late thirteenth century, is the most original sacred building in the city of Lodi. Its main peculiarity is represented by the two "open-air" mullioned windows of the facade, which represent the first example of a model that between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries spread throughout northern Italy.
The building was erected between 1280 and the early fourteenth century on the site of a small church of the Order of the Friars Minor dedicated to San Nicolò. On the initiative of the bishop of Lodi Bongiovanni Fissiraga, the religious undertook the construction of the current body of the building supported by donations from the noble Antonio Fissiraga.

In 1527 the management of the temple was entrusted to the Reformed Franciscans of San Bernardino, who in 1840 were replaced by the Barnabite Fathers, who had already occupied the adjacent convent in 1834, transforming it into a college; the first years of their activity were entirely dedicated to a thorough restoration of the complex, which ended in 1842. Although the Barnabites have obtained the apostolic ministry of the church of San Francesco "for perpetual use", the ownership of the building is still remained the prerogative of the parish of the Cathedral of Lodi, on which it still depends. The building is listed among the Italian national monuments.
