Queen Elizabeth Country Park

Highlight • Trail

Here, cut through by the South Downs Way, is an excellent bike park, festooned with a variety of mountain bike trails to suit a variety of abilities. It can get a little over-faced in truly wet weather, but it's the best place or miles around for mtb-related thrills.

The Queen Elizabeth Country Park Visitor Centre marks the gateway to the park, and is situated just off the A3 at the foot of Butser Hill.

The centre has information about the park and there’s a cafe (Beechwood Kitchen) here too. There are also bike tools and a water tap outside.

The park’s chargeable car park is situated just outside the visitor centre.

Queen Elizabeth Country Park has more than 2,000 acres (809 ha) of downland and woodland to explore. The park contains Butser Hill, the highest point on the South Downs. The predominantly beech woodland was planted in the 1930s and is criss-crossed with footpaths and cycling trails. There is also a visitor centre, play areas, picnic spots, plus more to keep you entertained.

Love that they had a dog washing station at the visitor centre. Great end point so you can clean the dog before getting back in your car

We were lucky enough to find home-made flapjack and water available here on a stand. I know of another hiker weeks earlier who also came across this trail magic so it seems to be a regular thing. Don't rely on it being there but definitely keep a couple of quid handy to treat yourself if you're walking or cycling the South Downs Way. You won't regret it!

The Red Lion, Chalton

Highlight • Pub

The Red Lion is a charming country pub in Chalton characterised by its thatched roof. It’s believed to be one of the oldest pubs in Hampshire, dating from at least the 16th century.

There are two trails here. A blue "intermediate" and red "advanced trail" with jumps and very steep sections. The blue "intermediate" trail is just about OK for hybrid bikes with front suspension and you'll want to drop your tyre pressures to 50psi for the rough ground. I had 75psi for road riding and it was far too harsh. I didn't want to drop the pressures as I had an 18-mile ride home ahead of me.
Both trails really need a mountain bike with fatter tyres to cope with the rough tracks. Don't bring a road bike or anything like tag-alongs for young children here.
