Walldorf Museum

Highlight • Historical Site

The history of Walldorf is extraordinary: the community is only 320 years old and was founded by Waldensian religious refugees from Piedmont. Since the Protestant Waldensians were not tolerated in the Franco-Catholic Duchy of Savoy in the 17th century, they left their homeland. A group of them was received in June 1699 at the (now defunct) manorial Gundhof near Mörfelden in the Protestant Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt.
In 1702, fourteen families (54 people) decided to build their own village nearby. Along what is now Langstraße, which for a long time was Walldorf's only street, their half-timbered farms were built.

The flight of the Waldensians, the problem of founding a new "colony", the special rights ("privileges") they received to ensure their existence, the international support they received... all these are topics that the Walldorfer Museum in close cooperation with the working group for Walldorfer history (AWG) accepts intensively.
