Saint Catherine's Shrine

Highlight • Religious Site

A small altar dedicated to Saint Catherine is located somewhat undignified directly on the K93 county road, accessible via a few steps.

Catherine of Alexandria (or Catherine of Alexandria) is one of the most famous saints. She is venerated as a martyr in the Catholic and Orthodox churches and is one of the so-called Virgines capitales, the four great holy virgins. Saint Catherine is one of the fourteen holy helpers in times of need and is considered to be a helper for tongue ailments and speech difficulties. She is the patron saint of schools, philosophical faculties, seamstresses and tailors. She is the patron saint of numerous churches.

According to Christian tradition, she lived in the 3rd and early 4th centuries and was martyred under the Roman Emperor Maxentius (306–312), according to other sources under Maximinus Daia (305–313) or under Maximian (286–305).

According to current research, Catherine is almost certainly an invented character.

The wagon wheel shown indicates that on "St. Catherine's Day" all wheels used to have to rest, including the spinning wheel, the mill wheel, the wagon wheel, and later also the bicycle.

"𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗺ü𝗵𝗹𝗲"

The "Thielenmühle" is named after a former owner (in the first maps it was called "Hornißmühle"). Built as a grain mill around 1680, it was - like many other mills - initially privately owned. In 1907, however, it became a cooperative mill with 20 partners. In 1947 the milling operation had to be stopped because the corrugated beam to which the water wheel is attached broke. The comrades at that time sold the mill and then built a new electric mill in Monzelfeld. Another mill was once housed in today's house, an oil mill, in which the surrounding farmers had the rapeseed ground into oil. After the conversion and expansion of the residential building, a restaurant was opened for the first time in 1961. Source: text information board

Lorenzmühle Rest Area

Highlight • Rest Area

𝗟𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘇𝗺ü𝗵𝗹𝗲

In earlier times, the "Obere Lorenzmühle", one of the many mills along the Hinterbach, stood in this area (Monzelfeld district). The mill race can still be seen slightly above this square, as can the location of the mill building carved into the rock. The "Hinterbach" has its source in the Gonzerath area and is fed by more than 10 smaller or larger rivulets up to this point. After flowing through the town of Veldenz, it was given the name "Veldenzer Bach" in the official cadastre and finally flows into the Moselle after about 14 km near Mülheim. Until the middle of the last century, numerous grain and oil mills were powered by this stream, most of which were privately owned. Some were also community and society mills. A total of around 20 mills have been identified throughout the Hinterbachtal. Mills have not been in operation in Hinterbachtal for a long time. Some of these former mills have now been converted into residential or weekend houses and the locations of the other mills can now only be recognized by ruins. Source: text information board

In addition to committed citizens from Veldenz, young people who were in Veldenz in the summer of 2014 as part of a non-profit work camp organized by the International Youth Community Services (ijgd) also helped with the construction of the Graf Georg Johannes Weg. During their stay - the two bridges over the Hinterbach and various paths were built. Source: text information board

Hinterbach Stream Trail

Highlight • Trail

On the premium trail "Graf Georg Johannes Weg," the Hinterbach stream in the valley floor is crossed three times. A beautiful, at times somewhat muddy, section of the trail.
