Cruz de Tejeda Restaurant

Highlight • Restaurant

With a height of around 1500m, Cruz de Tejeda is the highest pass in Gran Canaria and also marks the geographical center of the island. Here, various rural roads meet from all directions.

Here is also a popular viewpoints of the island and especially on weekends it attracts a lot of excursionists here.

You do not go wrong when you bring a jacket, because just on the north side of the pass the trade wind blows steadily and often drives quite cool clouds up the mountain.

A restaurant with bar and a stall invite you to linger. There is delicious almond cake or the local specialty "Bienmasabe", a very fine tasting almond syrup.

We had to laugh heartily when we mentioned in the bike rental shop that we want to ride the "Valley of Tears" today - and especially the short, crisp version - and we were then told that we should already prepare the divorce papers!!😂

On the first 2km of the GC606 (the short variant of this "Valley of Tears" route) we knew immediately what the girls at the bike rental meant!!🙈 Ramps of the nasty kind. Either our rear wheel was spinning or our front wheel was lifting. In addition, there is quite bumpy asphalt with cracks and pebbles. 😱 And it doesn't get any better after the 2 km either. We must have been at the limit 4 or 5 times. But to be honest, you also have to say: If you climb 1,000 meters in 10km, then you can only do it with beastly inclines. 😉

A highlight, well, of a special kind. 😉 I can therefore not recommend the GC606 either uphill or downhill. In the future we will probably drive the "Valley of Tears" via the GC210 and prefer to take on the additional 400m from Artenara to Ayacata. They don't hurt like the beastly GC606 ramps.

If you want to continue happily touring with your cycling partner: Make a marriage contract beforehand!🤣

Views of Roque Bentayga

Highlight • Natural Monument

Roque Bentayga is one of the most iconic geological formations on the entire island of Gran Canaria.

Located within the volcanic caldera of Tejada at 1,414 meters above sea level, it is known for its basaltic pitons. The first settlements of the Guanches, the aboriginal people of the Canary Islands, were in this same area of the Nublo Rural Park.

GC-811 Scenic Road

Highlight • Cycleway

Black gold - absolutely the finest new asphalt, a pleasant slope and almost no cars (taking the shorter and steeper main road) make this bypass a dream. Again and again fantastic views of the valley complete this. I can only highly recommend!
