Belgian Monument Heer

Highlight • Monument

Just before the liberation, eleven Belgian and one unknown resistance fighters were arrested in the woods of Rotem, on the Belgian side of the Maas and now a sub-municipality of Dilsen-Stokkem. On 12 September 1944, just a few hours before the liberation, they were shot in the woods where you can find the memorial with information board. Their bodies were found two days later under a layer of marl and branches. In addition to the memorial, there is a reminder of the visit of King Baudouin and the then Dutch queen to the monument and an information board with text, explanation, information about the annual commemoration and a collection of prayer cards that give names and faces to the victims.

Heerdeberg Sculpture Garden

Highlight • Monument

The sculpture garden of Landgoed Heerdenberg has changed compared to the past, but the natural stone statues can still be admired along the walking paths. These are statues from Zimbabwe that were purchased over several decades by José de Goede, who in 2002 bought the barn, the forest and the meadow and later also the farm of the Heerdeberg estate. Info and source: heerdeberg.nl/achtergrond

There is still a website of the sculpture garden about exhibitions (and sales) of art from Zimbabwe for projects there by José de Goede. It states that the sculpture garden is closed, but you can still see the natural stone statues, see beeldentuinmaastricht.nl

View of the Maas Valley

Highlight • Viewpoint

At various places along the footpaths, also in the Savelsbos and towards Cadier en Keer, you can see beautiful views over the Meuse valley. The Sint-Pietersberg is always visible somewhere as a striking landmark.

Sit-Shelter Bench in Savelsbos

Highlight • Structure

Located behind a gate and with water nearby. You won't find shelter here yourself, but you can sit on the flat stones. And they are stacked in such a way that there are gaps where amphibians such as the yellow-bellied toad and the midwife toad can hide.

Behind the stacked stones are piles of stones for the animals and the upright oak in the bench can be used by flying stags as a breeding ground.
