Sint-Willibrordus Chapel Westdoorn

Highlight • Religious Site

In the 7th and 8th centuries, religious preachers established a place of worship here. In 1483, there was already a chapel dedicated to Saint Willibrord. During the religious wars at the end of the 16th century, it was destroyed.

The current chapel dates from 1613.
Westdoorn became a well-known place of pilgrimage.
Every year on 1 May, a blessing of children takes place.

The guesthouse farms (library, farm Annie and farm Lilly) are three sister farms that in their origins go back to the Elisabethgasthuis of Antwerp. Guesthouses were charitable institutions in cities that were founded during the Middle Ages and were abolished during the French period.

You can listen to the full story at the 'Listening post'. Turn the wheel and go back in time.

Historical interpretation of the guesthouse farms:
The Grote Gasthuishoeve, the current library and office of Tourism Wuustwezel vzw, probably already existed in the thirteenth century.

From 1426 onwards, we find a great abundance of data in the guesthouse accounts about the establishment, repairs and maintenance of the farm. At first there was talk of one farm, later of three. In 1447, a second farm was built on the site where the Grote Gasthuishoeve stood (the later farm Annie).

Around 1620, the third farm was built (the later farm Lily). All farms were still built of wood, but the accounts from 1707 mention that the three farms were made of stone.

Fires and reconstruction
On 23 March 1911, the two ‘youngest’ farms burned down completely. The current form of the farms therefore dates from 1912 and the naming also dates from the same year. The names Annie and Lilly are said to refer to the names of the daughters of the then chairman of the Godshuizen van Antwerpen, Mr Van Nieuwenhuizen.

The Huis van het Kind is now located in the Annie farm. The local history society Wesalia II was also housed here for a while. In 2021, the Lilly farm was still an active agricultural company. During the Second World War, this farm served as a storage facility for the German army.

The barn of the Grote Gasthuishoeve was destroyed by a V1 bomb in 1945 and rebuilt in 1964. Playing children caused the barn of the farm to catch fire in 1969 and burned down completely in less than an hour. In 1991, the St. Elisabeth Hospital of Antwerp sold the Grote Gasthuishoeve to the municipality of Wuustwezel.

Because the farm was too close to the street, it was decided in 1993 to demolish the Gasthuishoeve and rebuild it 10 meters to the back. In the early 2000s, the municipal authorities added the Poort naar het Platteland to the Gasthuishoeve. On April 29, 2011, this extension was officially opened by Governor Cathy Berx.

The Church of Our Lady of Ascension is a parish church in the municipality of Wuustwezel. A first Gothic church was built between 1225 and 1250, on the site of a wooden church dedicated to Saint Lambertus, apostle of the Campine, since 1221. This church was replaced in 1485 by a larger building, which was adapted in the 18th century and enlarged in the neo-Gothic sense in 1899 and 1900, including a new transept. The spire as well as part of the western part were rebuilt in 1941-43 after destruction in 1940.

Old Town Hall Wuustwezel

Highlight • Historical Site

The old town hall is an architectural relic in the municipality of Wuustwezel.

In 1837, another plot had to be sold to pay for the finishing of the building.

The town hall remained in use until 1926, after which Kasteel Hens was chosen as the new town hall. After that, it was used to house the library and the local history society, among other things.

The former town hall became a protected monument in 1993.

In August 2015, it was announced that the municipality of Wuustwezel would sell the building, for which it no longer found a purpose. At the end of 2015, the building was sold to an architectural firm.
