Sarsen Stones Circle

Highlight • Natural Monument

A small collection of stones in a circle, with one smoother flat stone in the center. Sarsens are a type of sandstone that formed on chalk deposits over 30 million years ago
Glaciation cracked the layer and dragged the stones across the landscape
As the ice melted, the stones were left scattered across the fields of Wiltshire.

View of Alton Barnes White Horse

Highlight • Monument

One of Wiltshire's many white chalk horses, the Alton Barnes White Horse was cut in the early 1800s on the request of a local farmer. Well-maintained and much-visited, the horse lies just under a mile north of the village of Alton on the Pewsey Downs. Also on the hill is a long barrow and several examples of cross dykes, which are prehistoric earthworks.

The White Horse Trail passes right past it while the Ridgeway and the Great Stones Way pass nearby.

Knap Hill Car Park

Highlight • Parking

Knap Hill car park is a particularly useful spot from which to explore this section of the North Wessex Downs AONB and the Vale of Pewsey. Footpaths and bridleways head off in every direction from the car park and it's easy to create hiking routes as long or short as you like.

The Alton Barnes white horse is just to the west, although it's best seen from a little further afield.
