In 1924, the demolition of the water tower was discussed when constructional difficulties arose to build an underground connecting canal at the water tower and the abutment of the Franz Joseph Bridge. The Heimatschutzverein (Heimatschutzverein) and the Ministry of Public Works opposed this plan, which meant that the building could be preserved after hard disputes. The medieval building was underpinned with various concrete foundations and columns and the connecting channel was led through under the tower.

Johanniter Church, Feldkirch

The original building was built in 1218 by Count Hugo von Montfort for the commander of the Order of St. John, which existed until 1610. From 1982 to 1989, archaeological excavations and building studies were carried out by the Federal Monuments Office inside the church.
Since 1995 the church has served as an exhibition space for installations of contemporary art.

Feldkirch has a beautiful town center, which is relatively flat except for the castle and can be explored in 1-2 hours. Lots of old buildings between the Middle Ages and Art Nouveau - here and there something modern like the Montafon Center.
