Ole Nygaard Memorial Stone

Highlight • Monument

Carved on top of the stone is a caricature of Ole Nygaard, who, with his bag over his shoulder, wanders Denmark's winding roads to promote his cause.
Ole Nygaard 1828 - 1901

The memorial will be erected on the slope between Enghavevej and the lake in Lemvig, and its location is closest to the southern end of the lake.

On the back of the stone is the following inscription:
By doing quiet things like his, this country will grow.
Well, that is not asked abroad, but it impresses us with its conviction.
There is no hesitation here, do good as best you can
stretch out your hand for the glass, maybe he'll be a man.

This monument was erected in 1928 to mark his 100th birthday.
Founder Lemvig Afholdsforening 1881. For twenty years he wandered from house to house, from parish to parish without pay, sacrificing his life and goods for the uplifting of the people.

Lemvig Sødal is part of a tunnel valley that stretches from Lem Vig to the heathlands in the south. The tunnel valley was formed 23,000 - 21,000 years ago by a hundred meter thick glacier. In the summer months, meltwater formed and found its way to the bottom of the glacier. Here the water was collected in a large meltwater river that flowed over the ground. Over time, the water has created the tunnel valley. The water flowed almost 40 meters uphill and found an outlet 4 km south of Lemvig through a "glacier gate". The water quickly lost speed. Rocks, gravel and sand were deposited near the glacier rim while clay was further hauled away. Today, glacial meltwater gravel is quarried south of the village of Rome.
The beautiful lake valley became endangered in the 1970s when a motorway was planned to cross the valley south of Lake Lemvigs. The area was protected by the Danish Society for Nature Conservation in 1978 as a result of the work.
There is a walking trail around the entire lake and there are plenty of opportunities to sit and enjoy the birds.
