Casermette Hut on Mount Penna

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The Casermette del Monte Penna refuge is located in the Aveto Regional Natural Park, about an hour away from the sea, from the motorway exits (Lavagna and Borgo Val di Taro) and from Chiavari station. Originally a logistics base for the State Forestry Corps in the 1920s, it is now known as "Rifugio Penna".
It is located in a picturesque mountainous area between Mount Penna (1,735 meters above sea level) and Mount Pennino, surrounded by a beautiful fir and beech forest.
It offers accommodation, activities such as hiking and rock climbing, and is equipped for E-MTB adventures.

Nave del Penna

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Penna nave is a conical glacial conformation that lies on the north side of Mount Penna. Its shape recalls the hull of a ship and in the center you can also find an altar where mass is celebrated once a year. The wall surrounding the depression is known by the name Rocce della Neve, a real barrier that connects the Chiodo pass to Mount Penna and Trevine.

Lago del Penna

Highlight • Lake

Lago del Penna is a small lake located at the foot of the north face of Monte Penna. It is located at 1470 m.s.l.m., in a small basin of glacial origin surrounded by thick forests of beech and spruce trees. Its waters, generally clear, reflect the surrounding forest and, in a suggestive way, the peaks of the Penna and the Pennino. It is fed by a perennial stream that flows a few meters above and enters the lake at the southern shore. The maximum depth is about 1 and a half meters, while the average depth is around 50 cm. Regarding the marshy vegetation, in the central sector a settlement of Potamogeton natans can be seen.

Lake Penna is not only a landscape jewel, but also of great naturalistic value: it hosts a very rich population of amphibians (such as mountain frogs and newts ...), for which it plays an irreplaceable role as a reproductive site. To protect the aquatic habitats found there, in 2020 the area was classified as an "Integral Reserve" and equipped with a chestnut fence that is forbidden to cross.
