Checkpoint Berghaus Palfries

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The Berghaus Palfries is located at the foot of the Alvier summit. The almost continuously paved road from the Rhine Valley side meanders past more than 600-year-old Walser settlements and ends at the parking lot at the Berghaus. The moment when you drive over the crest and see the imposing Alvier with the Churfirsten in the background for the first time motivates you to go on for many more kilometers. The view of the Rhine Valley, Lake Walen and the Churfirsten is simply magnificent. Then another piece of cake, what more could you ask for?

Mountain house Palfries

Highlight • Restaurant

The Berghaus Palfries is located at an altitude of 1,700 meters on the Palfries plateau. A large parking area for hikers is located next to the restaurant, and the mountain station of the cable car is just a few steps away.

Enjoy a hearty meal or a refreshing drink while taking in the wonderful views of the Sarganserland region – before or after your hike on the plateau.

More information about the inn can be found here: palfries.ch/berghauspalfries.

Palfries Plateau

Highlight • Viewpoint

Very scenic plateau at the foot of the Alvier chain.
Technically very easy, all on gravel roads. Only at the Rietälpli does a very beautiful meadow trail (S1) start down to Alp Castilu.

Silex nodules

Highlight • Natural Monument

The boulders between Gauschla and Alvier on the Palfries terrace were broken off from the overlying rock face by weathering. They consist of limestone with circular and nodular flint inclusions, which were formed by slow recrystallization. This rock dates back to the Early Cretaceous period and was formed in the ancient Tethys Sea.

Sediments of shells and skeletal fragments of marine life were transformed into limestone over time, forming flint nodules. The Alps were later uplifted from the sea, and weathering brought these boulders to the surface. These flint nodules can be found along the hiking trail.

Brilliant view and all-round view up there! At the Berghaus / Gasthaus Palfries there is an optimal stop at the highest point of the tour.
