Schwerin's Oldest Half-Timbered House

Among Schwerin's streets that many don't find right away is Domhof. It's not located directly next to the cathedral, but across Puschkinstraße, beside the Schlachtermarkt (Butchers' Market). This cobblestone street, less than 60 paces long, is nonetheless quite special:

On it stands Schwerin's oldest house, a half-timbered building that now houses the State Office for Culture and Monument Preservation.

As the inscription on the decorative beam confirms, the house was built between 1562 and 1574 and survived several city fires. The inscription on the west wing reads:

"O Lord, have mercy on us and be gracious to us. Anno 1574."

The main building dates from the 18th century and was used for a long time as an inn, then in the 19th century as a hotel, which at one time bore the name
"Hotel de Paris." Since 1916 it has been used as an administrative building,
and in 1981 the monument preservation office moved in.

The magnificent front door lends the building a particularly dignified appearance.
