In Öjendorfer Park there is a long toboggan run at the southern end of the lake. Up on the mountain, different long and steep toboggan runs lead down. The tracks are up to 150 meters long.

This is the only bathing spot on Lake Öjendorf that has had the better water quality in recent years. It is close to the playground, kiosk, mini golf course and public toilets (only open during kiosk opening hours), nestled between a meadow, a small forest and a riverside path.
Since this year, the adjacent meadow has been officially designated as a barbecue area.

Italian War Cemetery Hamburg-Öjendorf

Highlight • Historical Site

In the park cemetery in Öjendorf there is a central burial place for the dead with Italian citizenship. In the post-war period, 5,849 Italian dead from all over north-west Germany and the Ruhr area were reburied in this honorary facility: dead from the labor camps, victims of the Neuengamme concentration camp and its satellite camps, and civilians. A ten meter high cross was erected in 1959 in memory of the dead.

Italian forced laborers in Germany
After Mussolini was overthrown and Italy left the alliance with Hitler's Germany in July 1943, the Wehrmacht and the Waffen SS disarmed numerous Italian divisions. Only those Italian soldiers who agreed to continue fighting on the German side were able to escape capture. Most of them refused to do so and were then transported to Germany, where they were declared forced laborers as so-called Italian military internees. This was done by circumventing their prisoner-of-war status under the Geneva Convention. From then on they were on the lowest level with the "Eastern workers", they were viewed as "traitors" and treated particularly badly.

number
The number of Italian forced laborers was considerable: around 15,000 of the more than 500,000 Italian military internees came to Hamburg. Many of them were used to do heavy work in building makeshift homes. Due to the harsh working conditions and poor care, many of them died.
